New Graduate: MLIS

M.S. MLIS, UNT/Emory 2010

In August, I completed the Masters of Library Science program at The University of North Texas. I began the program in August, two years ago, with a 35-member cohort. Each of us received a scholarship from The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Laura Bush Foundation to promote librarianship for the digital age. Now, I am trained as a 21st century librarian withThe stage information skills that are necessary in this new digital age.

With experience in using technologies such as Drupal, EADS, MODS, and Dublin Core, I am better prepared to capture attributes that promote access to materials through a greater understanding of the information seeking skills that traverse our world.

What an Honor: Phi Kappa Phi

I will be inducted (April 29, 2010) into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. It is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society. Founded in 1897, its distinguishing characteristic is the belief that all branches of higher education merit recognition. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors.

Spring Break is Here: Classes out for Some

Spring break is finally here. I will be cleaning out my closets and completing the last of four classes before I graduate from University of North Texas’ Master of Library Science program. It has been a worthwhile experience and I am feeling better prepared for the new age of library instruction and information literacy skills.

The program, funded by Institute of Museum Libraries through the Laura Bush Foundation, selected 35 students from Georgia to prepare them for a career in Library Science with a strong digital media emphasis. Recognizing that Georgia was without a library science program at the time, Emory University’s Martin Halbert solicited a grant request to fund the program that made it possible for people like me to participate. Also, this provided me the mechanism to pursue a life long dream to become a librarian prepared to work in a variety of settings.

However, I am first and far most–a school media specialist who loves her job! Though, through my Master of Library Science degree, I know that the students and staff will benefit from my new found knowledge.

Getting the Job You Want

In this new economy, some Liberty Point staff members have become better prepared to meet the daunting challenges of this less than favorable economy. Recently, staff in positions that may be abated participated in an a career workshop to enhance their job skills. The workshop, Getting the Job You Want, was conducted by School Media Specialist Deborah Simmons and supported by Liberty Point’s Principal, Dr. Vanessa Johnson. Simmons presented information such as: how to discover who’s hiring; what is networking; what is social networking; how to make social networking work in the job search process; how to access my qualifications, and what not to wear to an interview.

Also, staff participants received information regarding “hidden” places to locate career options; how to apply for technical schools; how to apply for the Hope grant for technical education; how to develop networking groups, and ways to use technology to elevate them in their quest for employment and academic opportunities. They were guided to websites such as the Georgia Department of Labor, USAJOBS, The Federal Government’s Official Jobs Site for federal jobs, Dekalb County Public Library and other career resources that make the job seeking process easier. Each site listed above offers career enhancement ideas, methods to design and create resumes, cover letters, techniques to answering interview questions, and videos that provide visual instructions.

Participants were excited to receive this information because many recognized they had not updated their resume in several years. Now, participants have many more tools to craft resumes and cover letters to participate in a new workforce of opportunities that intertwine with 21st century technological skills.
